Posted on Wednesday, August 31, 2011

NHCH is proud to announce the establishment and opening of a new Native Hawaiian Health Clinic which will begin seeing patients September 1st, 2011.

The mission of Native Hawaiian Health is in harmony with North Hawaii Community Hospital’s mission “to improve the health status of North Hawai’i by improving access to care and providing appropriate high-quality services at a reasonable cost”. Native Hawaiian Health will provide culturally appropriate, high-quality medical and behavioral health services for all Native Hawaiian ‘ohana and clearly identify Native Hawaiian health disparities particular to North Hawai’i and clearly formulate a plan of action with the goal of rectifying those health disparities.

Native Hawaiian Health understands and embraces a culturally appropriate healthcare approach for Native Hawaiians must take into account traditional Hawaiian healing principles that differ significantly from those of Western medicine. Western medicine focuses on the physical and psychological signs, symptoms and causes of illness; while Hawaiian Healing principles focus on spiritual and interpersonal concerns, complaints and causes.

Native Hawaiian Health is committed to providing care which is genuinely patient-centered within a total healing environment, recognizing the patient as a whole individual in the context of his/her family and community. And empowering patients and families to become actively involved in their own health-care choices by providing educational support to enable and encourage self determination.

Lead by Medical Director Coralie Texeira, M.D. and Director of Behavioral Services, Claren Ku’ulei Kealoha-Beaudet, Psy D; Native Hawaiian Health is assessing patients to determine the full scope of need among Native Hawaiians in North Hawai’i. Known health challenges for Native Hawaiians include well-documented higher rates of Type 2 Diabetes, higher rates of hypertension or high-blood pressure, and higher rates of attempted suicide among Native Hawaiian adolescents, as well as other, less
patently visible health and behavioral care and treatment challenges.
