North Hawai’i Community Hospital is celebrating Baby Friendly Day, as well as its second-year anniversary of its Baby Friendly designation. North Hawai’i Community Hospital first received the prestigious international recognition as a Baby-Friendly designated birth facility by Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., in 2015, and was only the second hospital in the state to receive the special designation.

Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. is the accrediting body in the US for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund.

The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies.

There are more than 20,000 designated Baby-Friendlyhospitals and birth centers worldwide, currently almost 450 Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the United States.  The “Baby-Friendly” designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey.  Numerous studies indicate that there is lower risk for certain diseases and improved health outcomes for both mothers and babies who breastfeed.
