Community Benefit Topic Identified
Posted on Friday, December 27, 2013

In 2013 NHCH, like all non-profit hospitals across the nation, participated in a Community Health Needs Assessment required by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). This assessment was conducted for all hospitals in the state of Hawaii last December thanks to the Healthy Communities Institute (HCI) and Healthcare Association of Hawaii (HAH).

A link to our CHNA survey was posted on our hospital website and eNewsletter in December 2012 encouraging staff and community members to participate. Thanks to you, our North Hawaii region had the highest number of responses after Oahu! This assessment asked participants for their feedback as to what are the greatest health disparities and needs in North Hawaii .

The findings of this assessment (click here to see our Community Health Needs Assessment) help us to better understand the health needs in our North Hawaii communities, as well as help guide our community benefit efforts. Based on the findings of this Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), our hospital’s CHNA committee, comprised of hospital staff and community members, identified “Exercise, Nutrition and Weight” as our focus topic for the next three years. This all-encompassing topic of “Exercise, Nutrition and Weight” enables us to touch upon numerous health disparities outlined by our community in the assessment which included: diabetes, stroke, heart disease, chronic diseases and more.

In 2014, we will develop and begin to implement our “Community Health Improvement Plan” (CHIP) to address this identified topic within our community. We understand that our topic of “Exercise, Weight and Nutrition” has a rather large scope and recognize collaborative relationships with numerous community members and organizations will be the key to success. We look forward to building upon and developing new relationships as we shift towards focusing on preventative care and community-based health efforts.
