Now Accepting Island-Wide Maternal Care Patients on Space Available Basis
Posted on Tuesday, April 02, 2013

With overcrowding easing within our hospital’s Family Birthing Unit, the Waimea Women’s Center is now accepting island-wide maternal care patients on a space available basis.  The Waimea Women’s Center has the capacity to accept 40 maternal care patients each month.

Our maternal care patient projections have eased, and this adjustment allows the hospital more flexibility to admit maternal care patients from outside the hospital’s defined service area.  “These updated projections allow us to modify our admissions and provide service to those seeking our high quality, high touch maternal health care island wide,” stated NHCH Interim CEO Lowell Johnson.

Effective April 2, 2013, 40 maternal care patients per month will be accepted based on patient due dates; the Waimea Women’s Center will continue to give preference to maternal care patients from within our service area and will now accept maternal care patients from outside our service area on a space available basis.

Our service area is defined by the Hawaii County Emergency Medical Response zone, which is the area north of a line roughly running from Laupahoehoe on the Hamakua coast across the Saddle to Kukio in North Kona and includes: Puuwaawaa Ranch, Puulani, Puako, Mauna Lani, Mauna Kea, Waikii Ranch, Pohakuloa Training Camp, Hawi, Kamuela, Honokaa and Laupahoehoe.

Our internal Maternal Health Task Force evaluated capacity, safety, patient satisfaction, and financial and resource implications and made recommendations that led Administration to update this maternal care admissions policy.  For more information, please contact NHCH’s Waimea Women’s Center at 808-885-9606.
