Cookies for Cancer
Posted on Wednesday, February 27, 2013

This past Valentine’s Day, more than 20 hospital employees and volunteers baked nearly 500 cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and pies to raise funds to support American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.  Hospital employees are participating in this year’s 10th Annual Waimea Relay For Life event on Saturday, April 27th, with a hospital-sponsored team.   In addition, they are raising funds for the American Cancer Society.

“Thanks to hospital employees like Teri Peterson, Clinical Leader in Same-Day Surgery, who baked for days preparing her famous cheese cake pies and carrot cake loafs, we were able to raise $1,011 from our Valentine’s Day bake sale,” says Laurie Clifford, NHCH’s Relay For Life team co-captain and Unit Secretary in NHCH’s Diabetes Wellness Center and CardioPulmonary Department. “Our fundraising goal is $2,500, so we are nearly half-way there!”

The Valentine’s Day bake sale is just one way the hospital’s Relay For Life team is raising funds to support this global American Cancer Society event. In the coming weeks, the hospital’s Relay team members will also be hosting a garage sale and selling snacks to fellow hospital employees.

Relay For Life is a fun event held in thousands of communities around the globe to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer.  Relay teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a path at the Waimea Community Park. Because cancer never sleeps, Relay For Life is a 24-hour event where one member from each team is asked to be on the track at all times.
