NHCH Trauma Coordinator "Storyteller" in Alcohol Awareness Film
Posted on Friday, July 06, 2012

NHCH Trauma Coordinator, Lynn Witte, is one of 29 “storytellers” featured in Kids Want Role Models Not Bottles alcohol awareness film called “Perils and Pearls in Paradise.”

Kids Want Role Models Not Bottles is an awareness campaign targeted at not only Hawai‘i Island youth, but adults as well, including parents, grandparents, guardians, aunties, uncles, cousins.  The mission of Kids Want Role Models Not Bottles is to provide adults and youth with knowledge about Hawai?i Island as it relates to underage drinking prevention.

One way Kids Want Role Models Not Bottles is getting the word out about their alcohol awareness campaign is by an educational documentary film called “Perils and Pearls in Paradise.”  This film provides a picture of alcohol on Hawai‘i Island with real stories from our community through the eyes of 29 “storytellers,” including local politicians, youth, recovering alcoholics and healthcare providers and Lynn Witte, NHCH Trauma Coordinator.  “In the film, I talk about how hard it is for healthcare providers  in the Emergency Room  to take care of anyone, especially young people,  who have been needlessly injured or killed because of alcohol-related vehicle accidents,” said Lynn.  “We think about our own kids, the emotional distress these families feel, and all of this stays with us forever.”

Underage drinking is a real problem on Hawai‘i Island with scary statistics to support this claim.  For instance, 6.2% of 6th graders admit to having used alcohol in the past 30 days; this number jumps to nearly 50% of 12th graders.  Plus, 13 years old is the mean age of first drunkenness, with 14 years old the mean age of Hawai‘i Island youth starting to drink regularly.   Kids Want Role Models Not Bottles encourages grandparents, parents, and guardians to keep communication lines open with youth.  Even though you may think your child isn’t listening, research tells us otherwise.
