Donors Support a "Community Lifeline"

NHCH is grateful to long-time community members and hospital supporters Edwin and LaVerne DeLuz of Paauillo, who through their business as well as their personal lives have supported the North Hawai’i community for over 50 years.

Edwin and LaVerne DeLuz have always felt strongly that North Hawai‘i needed a quality care facility.  In fact, they have supported NHCH in their own private way for decades.  But it wasn’t until five years ago that having a hospital close to home became so personal.  LaVerne began dialysis, which was located at NHCH, and the DeLuzes visited NHCH almost on a routine basis. During this time, both LaVerne and Edwin noticed several of the concrete wheel stops in the hospital’s parking lot were damaged, missing or worn out.

LaVerne continued to receive quality care at NHCH over the next several years with continued dialysis as well as from NHCH’s Emergency Room prior to her passing in May of last year.  LaVerne is survived by Edwin, who has also received care at NHCH as recently as this year, and their children Debbie DeLuz-Balog and Greg DeLuz.

“Edwin and LaVerne have both felt that the hospital, the people, and the care provided to the North Hawai‘i community are an important lifeline that needs to be maintained,” says Kevin Balog, son-in-law and trust representative.  Balog continues, “They both believe NHCH is an intricate piece of fiber in the community, and they have always supported the hospital in their own special way.”  That’s why when Edwin heard NHCH was building a new parking lot, he knew just what to do.  The Edwin and LaVerne Irrevocable Trust donated over $12,000 worth of cement wheel stops to NHCH’s new employee parking lot, which was completed last month.

This wonderful donation not only helps to make NHCH’s parking lot safer for our patients, employees and visitors to the hospital, but it is another example of LaVerne’s legacy living on and Edwin’s continued commitment to support a “community lifeline”.
